After weeks of rumors, the AI chip giant officially announced on Thursday that it will buy the open-source repository for nearly $13 billion. Nvidia Corporation announced on Thursday that it has agreed to acquire the open-source AI platform Hugging Face for $12.

The infrastructure surrounding open AI may ultimately be more commercially valuable than many of the individual models flowing through it.

Jensen Huang’s estimated net worth nearly reached $200 billion Friday, rising alongside Nvidia’s stock one day after the company announced it will acquire artificial intelligence model hub Hugging Face.

That emphasis makes it a good fit for Nvidia, whose founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, has himself been an advocate for open-source AI software. Owning Hugging Face would also provide Nvidia a direct line to a community of AI developers and hobbyists whose software often runs on Nvidia chips.
